About Empowered Novels
Empowered Novels was created to help young people who are often under-represented, overlooked, or made to feel different discover that they belong.
Through personalised graphic novels, readers become the heroes of science-driven adventures that celebrate curiosity, resilience, and possibility.
Our aim is not simply to create books. Our aim is to help young people feel seen, accepted, and inspired to pursue opportunities that may previously have felt out of reach.
We believe that representation and education are most powerful when they work together. When a young person sees someone like themselves solving problems, exploring science, and shaping the future, it becomes easier to imagine doing the same.
My story
My name is John O'Hare.
I began my career as a teacher before moving into the technology sector, where I spent many years at Nokia, eventually serving as Head of Innovations for ten years and helping to lead learning and innovation programmes that reached tens of thousands of learners worldwide.
Despite enjoying a successful career in technology, I chose to return to the classroom because I wanted to work directly with young people again and better understand the challenges my children will face as they grow older.
I am a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, a Chartered Teacher, I spent my Fulbright year teaching in the US, and hold a Master's degree with distinction from the University of Cambridge focused on learner motivation.
I am also the author of A Sketchy Knowledge of AI, a cartoon-based introduction to AI that reached Number 5 in the Amazon best-sellers chart over Christmas 2023.
Metamorphorces is my small innovation studio focussed on using humane technology to make the world a slightly better place.
